English Language Learners

We offer course pathways at M.E. LaZerte for English language learners based on Alberta Education’s language proficiency benchmarks in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Acquiring academic language proficiency takes 5-7 years. A learner’s progression through the ESL Benchmarks from junior high to high school may not be linear. Expectations at high school increase in terms of linguistic complexity, taking into account the amount of academic language required for credit in 10-level prerequisite courses required for the Alberta high school diploma.
