English Course Pathways

English Language Arts 10-1, 20-1, 30-1

This course pathway includes the six areas of reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing. There is an emphasis on the analysis of literature. Analytical writing and critical thinking are major components of these courses. This pathway is for students whose plans may include attending university. 

 

English Language Arts 10-2, 20-2 30-2

This course pathway includes work in all six areas of the English Language Arts Program: reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing. There is a focus on persuasive and functional writing. This pathway is for students who may not plan on attending university. Some programs at NAIT for instance, accept students who take English 10-2, 20-2 and 30-2.

SUPPORT CLASSES

Support classes are taught in a structured environment by teachers who show students how to practice strategies to improve their learning in core courses. S Classes offered include English Language Arts 10-2S, 20-2S, and 30-2S. 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS 10-4, 20-4, 30-4

This course pathway highlights six language arts—listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and representing. Students engage all six language arts as they study texts and create their own texts in relevant situations for a variety of purposes and audiences. Courses provide students with practical and applied opportunities to develop basic reading, writing and functional literacy. This pathway is for students who plan on transitioning from school to the workplace and community.
